Le grotte mostrano un incantevole paesaggio sotterraneo. La forza dell`erosione carsica sui calcari del Cretacico superiore (periodo coincidente con la scomparsa dei dinosauri) è qui documentata in tutta la sua maestosa potenza. Reperti fossili testimoniano che le grotte costituiscono un primo e sicuro rifugio per l`uomo nel Paleolitico superiore (circa 40.000 anni fa). Esse sono un susseguirsi di gallerie, saloni, strettoie e pozzi che danno vita a forme uniche nel loro genere: la Sala del Castello, la Sala
del Coccodrillo, la Sala
degli Ortaggi, la Pagoda
sono solo alcuni esempi. A pochi km dalle grotte ed aggrappata ad uno sperone roccioso, Castelcivita domina la sottostante vallata del Calore. Simbolo del paese è una torre di avvistamento costruita alla fine del XIII sec., che attualmente ospita una mostra sulla civiltà contadina. Nel centro storico si possono ammirare interessanti portali in pietra, si incontrano antiche chiese e conventi e i ruderi dell`antico castello.

The force of the stalactite erosion pressing on the Cretacico (a period coinciding with the passing away of the dinosaurs) shows its majestic power.
Fossils testify that the caves constituted a first and secure shelter for man in the Paleolithic era (about 40,000 years ago).
It is a succession of arcades, bottlenecks and wells that give life to unique shapes: the Room of the Castle, the Room of the Crocodile, the Room of the Vegetables, the Pagoda are some examples.
Castelcivita lies a few kilometers from the caves, clinging to a rocky spur, dominating the valley of the Calore river.

In the historic city center you can admire interesting stone portals, ancient churches, cloisters and the remains of the ancient castle.
